Essential phrases for exchanging information and ending telephone calls

In another video I made, I gave you some phrases for getting through on the telephone, as well as leaving and taking messages. In this video, I will give you some phrases we can use to exchange and confirm information, leave messages on answerphones, plus phrases to show interest and end the call. Let us start with some phrases both the person called and the caller can use:

Would you mind spelling that for me?

Could you please repeat that?

Can you speak a little slower please?

Please hold for a moment. I have another call.

Could you speak up a little please?

Sometimes, when we make a call, the person we want to speak to is not available, so we have to leave a message on their answerphone or mailbox:

Hi Mark, this is Catherine. Could you please return my call as soon as possible?

Hi Jane. Just a quick message to let you know that I will be at the meeting later.

Hello Mr Jacobs. Could you call me back please? We need to speak about your car.

Good morning Luke. I can’t seem to reach you on your landline or mobile. Please call.

Hi Sandra. What are you doing this evening? Please call me when you have a moment.

It’s always good to show your interest with a few short phrases or conversational fillers:

I see / Umm / Okay

I understand / Mmm / Uh-huh

Really? / You’re joking! / Hmm

That’s great / Fine / Super

Amazing / Incredible / No way!

It is a good idea to confirm what you have spoken about and perhaps agreed on:

Okay, I’ve got it. Your number is 0165 – 2398790, right?

So, your plane arrives at 4pm tomorrow. I’ll meet you at the airport.

I can confirm that I will arrive at your company at 9am on Friday.

Let me repeat. Your address is…

I will send you an email later today, confirming our appointment.

Finally, let us look at ways to end the telephone call.

Well, I have to go to a meeting now. Talk to you soon.

I have another call coming through. Let’s talk again tomorrow.

Thanks for calling. Bye for now.

I will have to let you go. It was great catching up.
